Although it is true to say that I am just as fond of dogs as I am of cats and, indeed, from childhood and into my twenties we were rarely without one or the other or both, cats have been my almost constant companions latterly. It is their independence that makes them the ideal pet for me. They don't need taking for walks and, if I want to wonder off for a weekend or so, I can relatively happily do so in the knowledge that they have the cat flap to enable them to come and go as they please and a nice neighbour who will feed them. I say relatively happily because being a bit daft when it comes to my cats, I do find I still worry about them when I am away.
It would appear that my cat's are just as daft about me. According to my home help, when I am away, Snugly just mopes on the windowsill rather than the usual greeting he gives her, and Pugsey is nowhere to be see. I quite often find when I return home I dont see Pugsey for a day or so and I reckon he thinks "Well if he can go on holiday, so can I". I suspect he goes to stay with a neighbour and just looks back periodically to see if I have come home. When he finds I have, he moves back in!
